Name of Research Project: Investigating New Types of Engagement, Contact, and Response Technologies in Policing (INTERACT).

Description of Project: This project will employ a mix of qualitative and quantitative elements to pursue a broad understanding of technologically mediated police contact as both a policy and a public experience.

Data Controller:
Edinburgh Napier University

Purposes for Collection/Processing:
Research and Education This aim of this research is to explore technologically mediated police contact through the following five research questions:
1. How do the police and public experience and perceive technologically-mediated contact across the UK in a diverse range of contexts?
2. What is the potential impact of different types of technologically-mediated contact on police legitimacy for various publics?
3. What does ‘visible’ and ‘accessible’ policing mean in the digital age, to both the police and various publics?
4. What is the role of technologically-mediated contact in building police legitimacy, and how police organisations best work towards this end?
5. How can theories of legitimacy and procedural justice be developed such that they are applicable in times of rapid technological development?

Legal basis:
Art 6(1)(e), performance of a task in the public interest/exercise of official duty vested in the Controller by Statutory Instrument No. 557 (S76) of 1993 as amended, e.g. for education and research purposes. Your data will not be used for any other purposes. Because we are processing under Art 6(1)(e), participants have the right to object to any processing at all in relation to the study, in addition to the right to opt out.

This research project does not intend to collect or process any special category personal data e.g. criminal conviction data, political opinions etc – please do not provide any information of this type in your responses to research questions or during focus group discussions.

In the unlikely event that special category personal data is collected, the University relies on Article 9(2)(j) for processing, which will primarily include deletion of the data from the information collected.

Whose information is being collected:
Police officers, police staff, and members of the public who volunteer to participate.

What type/classes/fields of information are collected:

From the subject/participant directly.

Is personal data shared internal and external to the University:
No personal data will be shared beyond the research team (Professor Liz Aston, Dr Megan O’Neill, Professor Ben Bradford, Dr Helen Wells, Dr Will Andrews, Dr Estelle Clayton) and Edinburgh Napier’s University’s confidential, secure transcription service.

How long is the information kept for:
The PI will store and use data in accordance with institutional guidance governing Data Protection at Edinburgh Napier University: Edinburgh Napier University Research Data Management Policy Introduction/Rationale Scope of Policy Policy Aims and Objectives. After completion of planned project outputs, all data not suitable for archiving will be kept by the PI under lock and key for a period of four years, after which it will be destroyed. Consent forms will be retained for a period of six years and then destroyed. The PI will be responsible for the long-term archiving of the data for a reasonable period after the end of the active use of data. The Edinburgh Napier University Data Management Policy requires anonymised research data to be retained after project completion which substantiate research findings, are of potential long-term value or support a patent, for at least 10 years. The policy also requires that funders and/or sponsors requirements are met. Long-term storage is provided through the Edinburgh Napier University data repository. Participants will be asked to consent to long-term storage of the data they provide should it be of relevance to the research. Where it is, the given data will be archived in its anonymised and codified format, unless the participant withdraws permission before the data is anonymised and codified, after which it will not be retrievable.

Will the data be used for any automated decision making:
