For forty years I have been involved in the provision of higher education for police officers, through the HNC Police Studies, BA Police Studies, BSc Policing and PgDip Policing.  In addition I have been involved in researching, writing and publishing on policing in Scotland. At Bell College in Hamilton I founded the Scottish Centre for Police Studies, and on the creation of the University of the West of Scotland I was appointed founding Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice and Police Studies.  I was  involved in the setting up of SIPR and held the post of Associate Director for Network 3: Police Organisation from 2006 to 2013.

I am co-editor of the standard text on the police in Scotland, Policing Scotland and have written and presented extensively on police governance and accountability, policing policy and practice, and police education and training.  I have also carried out a number of research reports for Scottish police forces and organisations. Have acted as supervisor and external examiner for a number of PhDs in policing.

Since retiral in February 2013 I have continued involvement in a number of projects and presented at a number of conferences.
