I have recently retired from Police Scotland after 30 years service which comprised 5 years with Thames Valley, 24 years with Central Scotland (including secondments to SCRO Fingerprint Bureau and the Scottish Police College, initially as Head of Probationer Training and latterly as Head of Leadership & Professional Development). During my service I undertook a number of roles including uniformed operational policing, CID, Hostage Negotiator, Silver Firearms Commander, Human Resources, Head of Emergencies & Events Planning, Force Training, Head of Strategic Development (which incorporated ICT, Media & Marketing, Firearms Licensing, Business Services, Project Management, Performance Analysis).

In 2012, as a SIPR Practitioner Fellow, I, together with Mr Garry Elliott and under the supervision of Professor Fyfe,  undertook a study of those aspects of organisational culture within the then 8 Scottish forces and 2 agencies which might help or hinder the reform programme. The findings were published in early 2013 (Elliott and Tatnell, 2013).

For my final 8 months service I was seconded full-time to SIPR during which I undertook a study of Key Senior Managers (Chief Superintendents and police staff equivalents) and their perception of their role within the new national force. I also promulgated the Practitioner Fellowship Programme within Police Scotland.
