An interactive event to explore institutional/systemic racism in the justice system.
The Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR) and the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) are organising an interactive event to explore institutional/systemic racism in the justice system. It is being supported by the Scottish Government’s Cross Justice Working Group on Race Data and Evidence (CJWG).
The aim of the workshop is to help attendees understand what institutional/systemic racism is, how to recognise it, why it is important to address it within the justice system and how to respond to it including sharing ideas on how to tackle the issue. This will include consideration of elements such as cultural sensitivity, differential treatment and outcome, unconscious bias and intersectionality.
The event is open to justice system practitioners, policy makers and academic researchers.
We are delighted that the following speakers will start our discussions with short presentations from their area of work. This will be followed by breakout sessions where participants can explore the issues in more detail. We will close with feedback from the groups and open discussion of next steps.
Chair: Dr Anna Souhami, University of Edinburgh
