Over the past seven years, the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) and partners have been working together to reduce violence in Scotland.
One of the VRU’s key initiatives is the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence (CIRV). Delivered in collaboration with partners in Glasgow, CIRV has produced significant reductions in gang related violence and has been the subject of a robust and comprehensive evaluation by the University of St Andrews.
The CIRV initiative is an excellent demonstration of effective collaborative practice which was founded on a successful programme in the United States and then developed and tailored for delivery in a Scottish context. Its success and current relevance to a chronic and universal challenge provides an opportunity to articulate the effectiveness of violence prevention strategies and specifically the application of the Public Health model as recommended by the World Health Organisation.
The Scotland and Violence Prevention conference is being held in collaboration with the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), St Andrews University, Medics Against Violence (MAV) and the Police and is being delivered under the WHO Violence Prevention Alliance banner .
This is a residential conference, at the Scottish Police College, located c. 30 miles (40 minutes) from Edinburgh Airport, and c.40 miles (1 hour) from Glasgow Airport. The conference will start with a welcome and buffet lunch on Friday 12th October, and end with lunch on Monday 15th October.
Full Conference – Residential Thanks to generous sponsorship, the Registration Fee for residential delegates attending the full conference will be £350, which will include: all lunches (four), dinners (three), entertainment, and B & B (three nights).
We hope that you will be able to stay for the whole conference (Friday lunchtime to Monday lunchtime), but recognise that this will not be possible for all. Please indicate on the Booking Form if you do not require accommodation for all nights.
Day-Delegates Due to a significant number of requests for Day Delegate places, a small number of places have been made available for Day Delegates for a limited time only. Until 28th September, Day Delegates will be able to register for the event at £75-00/day or £200 for the full conference. This rate will provide access to all workshops and inputs including ‘The Angel’s Share’ and lunches but no accommodation or evening meals. Note that these prices are only guaranteed for places booked prior to 28th September after which increased charges will apply.
Spouses / Partners (who are not attending any part of the Daily Programmes) will be welcome at a cost of £150, which will include: lunch on Friday and Monday, dinners (three), entertainment, and shared accommodation (Note: twin-bedded rooms only).
As well as Workshops by the practitioners who delivered CIRV in Glasgow, some of the leading international authorities on violence will be included in the Programme :
The Entertainment Programme will include a Formal Dinner, Whisky Tasting, and a special showing of The Angels’ Share, directed by Ken Loach, in the company of Screenplay writer, Paul Laverty, and gang-member turned film star, Paul Brannigan.
Winner of this year’s Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, The Angels’ Share examines the opportunities for Robbie (played by Paul Brannigan), a small-time Glaswegian troublemaker, to confront the devastation he has wreaked.
