He has 34 years policing experience, including 10 years as a chief officer in UK policing and holding the offices of Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable and Assistant Chief Constable. In 2014 was awarded the Queens Police Medal for distinguished service. As HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland, was the senior policing adviser to Ministers and accountable to Parliament. Responsible for developing an independent inspection regime for the national single police service, leading high-profile reviews following service failures and driving continuous improvement.
