The provision of reassurance and security are now regarded as prerequisites for attracting people and capital into urban locations . High visibility, zero tolerance policing (ZTP) strategies and the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) surveillance for example, are typically part of wider attempts to revive the fortunes of city centres given concerns that these spaces are insecure both economically and socially, for business and consumers alike. There is also a strong connection made in housing policy between community safety and urban renewal. The growing number of gated communities and the disciplinary role of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) exemplify the ways in which safety and security are seen as a vital part of sustainable community life. Against this background, the purpose of this seminar was to investigate the evidence for the effectiveness of policing interventions in securing economic and social well-being in city centre and residential environments.
